This CD (Evolution of the Blood Star), was a real surprise. Norine’s voice is low and sexy in the best Dusty Springfiled tradition. This is most interesting and eclectic release I have heard in a long time. It really is fairly schizophrenic like Todd Rundgren and some other artists from the deep, dark past. There’s funky tracks, new wavish ditties, jazzy sweetness, mixed up mashes and things I don’t think there is a name for yet.
Be Brave (Do it Right Blaxcot Remix)
The CD opens up with a sweet down tempo track apparently remixed by Blaxcot. Norine’s voice is haunting and floats over the lazy, funky mix. it almost reminds me of Massive Attack.
Stone and Feather
…and now for something completely different. What a cool song. This song almost reminds me of that new wave band Romeo Void. Norine’s voice sounds like she would kick your ass and then it’s a duet between her sweet girly voice and the bad asswomen. Mighty schizophrenic Norine
Crystallize
Here’s that jazzy Dusty sound I was talking about. Norine really has a stylistic range that is stunning. She croons like K.D. Lang’s lost sister. She has a killer band backiing her up too.
Conformity 451
I don’t know what to say about this song. It is just fucking cool. It is in a class all by itself. Sinister synths and evil Norine meets swoopy jazz girl Norine. Trippy as hell. You can never get enough Shaft wah wah guitar for sure.
Rock and a Hard Place
I can really dig this acid jazz, down tempo Sade style track. My dog gives it 9.5 bones for dance-alibity. I was swaying in my chair. This is such a sexy, groovy track. I think this track gets my vote for the best track to license to a film or the next Chanel campaign with Nicole Kidman.Tinkling piano, deep synth bass, stick on the snare jazz drum groove. Perfect.
Q (Evolution of the Blood Star)
Wow. This track seems to sum up Norine’s whole life philosophy. Slapping bass anchors the track which has so many sonic goodies. I will singing the chorus on this in my sleep. Um… what is the Blood Star anyway and can you see it with the naked eye. I think she has been hanging out with Sun Ra’s ghost. Ok, I am going to dance now. By far the coolest track I have heard all week.
Skylight
Just when I thought I had heard everything this girl can dish out, she comes in with this Etta James channeling piano ballad. The vocals are beautiful, imperfect, heart rending and bring a lump to your throat and tear to your eye.
A stand out track.
Alberta
Norine is from Canada and she is doing a strange country sounding singing and yodeling ode to her hometown I think. This is a country song made by and for aliens. Strange but cool as hell.
Doesn’t Matter Anyway
Roxy Music meets Annie Lennox or something like that. This is a great track, but not my fav.
In Space
A love boat groove ready for vacation complete with wah wah guitar, horns and Barry Manilow piano but wait… here’s a Sergaent Pepper psychadelic tripped out vocal part and then a over the top blues guitar jam and eventually weare back to the love boat. I guess this is what it’s like to be in space if you are Norine Braun. Wonderfully wacky.
Lonesome Side of Truth
Another very strange but engaging song. Norine is taking us on a trip inside her wonderfully twisted and interesting mind. It is so great that record labels don’t control things any more. Norine would have never seen the light of day if that were still true and that would have been sad.
IF I Could Be The One
Norine’s back to being that vulnerable, sweet girl breaking your heart. A wash of synths. oboe and voice fill this song. A simple but powerful track.
Be Brave(dub-triphop remix)
I love this track. The spooky Manchester wash of fender rhodes, swirling voice, deep bass and stone solid grooving drum kit propells this track. My choice for best chill out mix for the month.
I am terribly impressed with what Norine can with voice and with how cool she writes. The production and playing on this CD was killer. I want to hear more and I want to see Norine live. My dog gives it it four paws up.

I discovered Norine Braun a few months ago via magnatune.com and I must convince that I really like her CDs. And this "Next Wave" is a great idea from her part. Very eclectic, only talented artists with marvellous compositions. The sound quality is on top, very good production.

ReviewThis is the first time I've stumbled upon a release by this small independent record-label, but I am glad I did as they've got some great up-and-coming talent on their rooster. Or at least on this 20-track compilation. Musically we're all over the place, all the way from pop to rock, from hip hop to electronica, jazz to country and more. My personal favorites include the electric pop of Norine Braun and the jazz-pop of Katrina Parker.

Norine Braun solidifies her reputation as a tastemaker of distinction with her new Braun and Brains compilation, Next Wave. These twenty songs represent the cream of the crop from an enormous variety of styles. Braun's own "Crystallize" is a scintillating, flute-laced pop bauble, so infectious even her mispronunciation of "mischievous" comes off as ingratiating. Other highlights of the CD's glossy first half include Public Symphony's subtle chamber pop "Rise & Shine," Morgan's creepy "Nice Day (For a Murder)," and Katrina Parker's ballad "Killing Me," which snakes jazzy singer-songwriter passion through a dramatic piano-pop arrangement. Greg Summerlin's rather banal lyrics in "I Would Fight" are lifted by an aggressively sunny and charming arrangement of jangly guitars, and the track from David Z will please Madonna fans, as will Flow's jerky blue-eyed hip-hop R&B. The compilation's first rock track is ecb's fine "Francis and Matilda," which sounds like a collaboration between the Rolling Stones and ELO. Bulgaria's Liliput Project checks in with a timeless-sounding trance-electronica piece, and then the CD's biggest-name contributor, Marwood, shows why Benji Rogers's voice and songwriting have made the band such a hit in the past year with the crystalline, acoustic guitar driven pop-rock of "Name To Me No More." "Prince Meets Paul Weller" is not a bad description of NYC native Raymond Fiore, whose John Popper-esque vocals elevate his compact soul-rocker "Spin the Wheel" into one of the compilation's top tracks. "A Waste In Vain" by Sweden's Celebrate the Sun has a catchy chorus, if garbled English, and then there's a change in direction towards the rootsy with Tracy Stark's torchy jazz ballad "Morning Light" and Minimal's quirky, tuba and mandolin-driven "Crescent City" which sounds like it could almost have been a 1970s western TV show theme song. Indiegrrl founder Holly Figueroa's unique, deceptively sharp-edged chamber-folk style is well represented by "How It Is." Australia's Hopkinson has done better than the vaguely pretty but ulimately limp "No. 5," but Anthill has an engaging Canadian take on 1990s British pop, and guitarist Dave Hart's impressive and moody "Mexican Sonata" really is in something approaching sonata form. Finally, Australian Megan Laurie checks in with a solid, straight-ahead country tune, "Light at the End of the Bottle."

When I popped this cd in and went to the first track on the list (Norine Braun CRYSTALLIZE) the beginning of the track started out like some sort of fairy tale journey, from the minute Norine began singing I knew I would love this song. I’m reminded of the musical portions of those old 40s musical movies a la Fred Astaire or Judy Garland that I used to love watching as a child. I literally got the urge to break out into song and dance, definitely a voice that could turn around even the worst mood. Very fresh, very pleasant, well done Norine.
Onto song 2 (Morgan NICE DAY (for a murder)) – Morgan has a very sultry, sexy voice, this song pulled me in right away.
And lastly, song 3 (Marwood NAME TO ME NO MORE) – Musically I’m reminiscent of the Black Crows.. Vocally it seems like I know this band but can’t quite put my finger on it. Not that that’s a bad thing, Benji Rogers voice is strong and soulful at times yet soft and subtle when need be. Backed by the rest of the band, Rogers it a delight to the ears. Marwood is definitely a band I expect to be hearing on my radio soon..Sheila Hash - high4records.com
Twenty up-and-comers combine their songs on this new compilation. Spanning the entire genre scope, “Next Wave” hopes to find the diamond in the rough. Norine Braun starts with a sort of downtempo electronica pop sound on their “Crystallize”. Some songs really deliver like “Crescent City” by MINiMAL—an Americana classic rock-n-roll tune.

VARIOUS: The Independents (Braun and Brains Music)
There is an awful lot of music around to try and get your ears around. When someone - in this case producer/singer Norine Braun and compiler Craig Waddell - takes the time to sift through hundreds of submissions to select 18 tracks representative of this variety, it’s a great chance to sample the scenes. Beginning with Braun’s haunting "Alberta", we’re treated to NYC alt-folk (Dudley Saunders) and Ann Arbor, Mich. nu rawk (Krescent 4) alongside the folk of Ithaca, N.Y. ’s Patti Witten. The track sequencing puts it all together in a way that works like a great mix tape. (B+)

Norine Braun was kind enough to send me a copy of her company's first compilation, straightforwardly titled The Independents. As with any collection of this type, the quality of the music is uneven, but it's a well-chosen assortment that flows better than most, opening with three strong tracks: Braun's own epic-pop number "Alberta," Dudley Saunders's literary, electronic-traditional hybrid "Truck of the Rising Sun," and Maya Solovey's international pop gem "Dissolving."
Skinflick does a good job aping the Foo Fighters, while Krescent 4 similarly worships Soundgarden. The UK's The Papers aim for Neil Finn territory with their catchy pop-rock nugget "Lonely Being Beautiful," and Anton Glamb's "Subway" is lighthearted and amusing. Tracy Stark - an in-demand session keyboardist in New York indie circles and beyond - nails a nifty, jazzed-up adult contemporary vibe in "So Cool." Patti Witten evokes Roseanne Cash's smooth country-pop-rock style with the lovely, atmospheric "Black Butterfly," and Salme Dahlstrom's "Hello California" is crystalline, guilty-pleasure pop.

This independent band compilation is a feast of music that deserves to be heard. Truck Of The Rising Sun by Dudley Sanders has a Doors feel with deep South roots touches. 9 Red Sun kicks in some wicked female voiced power pop with Growing Up in Public. Skin Flick's Dear Adeline evokes Green Day with gritty vocals. Christa Couture's frantic folk in I Will and the hammering grunge of Krescent 4's Picture Perfect are a couple more ear openers on this excellent collection.

Compilations have a way of sneaking up on you. At times, they’re nothing more than cheap promotional tools that hinder, rather than help artists. However, there are other times when compilations come across as so strong and so staggeringly fantastic that one wonders how such a combination of great bands, and greater song selectors managed to get together.
Braun and Brains’ latest compilation, The Independents, falls under the latter category as it combines fantastic unsigned artists from a wide range of genres.
Let’s take a closer gander, shall we? You want Appalachian folk music? They’ve got it. Jazz-inspired soul with velvet vocals? Check! Hard-hitting, ear-splitting alternative rock? Coming right up! Crunchy guitar behind pop-inspired vocals? No problemo! Check out the fast-paced, hard-hitting drumming of Skin Flick or the Appalachian folk and gospel of Dudley Sanders. Anton Glamb’s quirky take on the New York Subway system will loosen even the most rigid critics from their towers of Elitism. His Casiotone beats combined with his childlike voice work wonderfully around the tinkling keyboard and super-charged motives! Amun Ra’s ‘Bullet Train’ is combines an up-tempo groove with the smooth moving beats of bands like Stereolab. The sound is truly unique as Ra’s voice blends effortlessly with chugging bass beats and swirling drum theatrics.
Industry people and record execs, be warned! These artists won’t last long! While trying to release the best imaginative unsigned music around, Brauns and Brains has collected a little of everything for listeners. With artists contributing songs from California to Chicago to Ithaca, the range of this CD is endless.
This album isn’t one of those albums with a handful of good songs surrounded by a larger handful of mediocre nonsense. This album is packed with 18 great songs that make it hard to believe that these are unsigned artists! Enjoy them, while they last!
